Carat weight is a unit of measure to weigh a diamond . In troy weight, 5 carats equal one gram. One point is equal to 1/100 of a carat . The more a single diamond weights, the more valuable it is when compared to other diamonds. This is one of the single most common reasons that diamonds are compromised on cut by some cutters to increase yield. If the stone has a larger carat weight, they are usually able to get a higher price per carat.
