Fancy Shapes
Any cut diamond that does not have a round girdle outline is classified as a fancy shape. Some of the most popular of the Fancy shapes
are Emerald, Marquise, Oval, Pear, Heart and Princess. These shapes, while they seem drastically different than round cuts, are graded in
basically the same way. The difference, of course, comes in the way proportions and symmetry are dealt with.
Unlike round cuts, the key factor of fancy cuts is usually their Length-to-Width Ratio. With rounds, this ratio is around
1:1. Not so with most fancy shapes.
To determine the Length-to-Width ratio of any given stone, you first divide the length of the stone by the
width of the stone. The Length and Width of the stone should be found in the "dimensions" field with a format of Length*Width*Depth. The
result of that calculation represents the length and goes before the colon. Width always has a value of 1, and goes after the colon. For example:
Dimensions Field: 10.45x5.57x3.29
Length: 10.45mm Width: 5.57mm
10.45 / 5.57 = 1.876, rounded to 1.88
(always round to the nearest .01)
Length-to-Width Ratio: 1.88:1
Each different type of fancy shape has a preferred Length-to-Width Ratio, as shown in the chart below.
